Laptop Purchase Program

While the District will provide laptops for checkout by any student, LVUSD is also working with a local partner, STS Education, to provide parents with the opportunity to purchase a personal device for their children. Purchasing a laptop not only helps LVUSD sustain the technology program, but also offers students the ability to have the same laptop year round (district laptops must be returned at the end of the school year), to decorate them any way they see fit (no stickers or any other customization is allowed on a district device), use any carrying case they might want, and to develop a sense of ownership that helps to ensure better care of the device. Please note that purchasing a laptop is not required - the district will provide loaner laptops for checkout at the school library for those students who do not bring their own. Loaner laptops will likely have been used by prior students and will be similar, but not necessarily the same as those listed on the web site.

The device that the District will uses are either the Acer TravelMate Spin B311. Designed with classroom environments in mind, these devices have touch screens and feature a ruggedized design with a rubber strip that frames the chassis and protects them from unexpected bumps and drops. A solid 360 degree hinge can take on up to 25,000 swings, while the cover can withstand up to 132 lbs of pressure. The keyboard is spill-resistant with a water drainage design that protects against accidental spills. It doesn't need a fan, so it's whisper-quiet and runs cool. Both are slender, light, and deliver long battery life for portable computing with great productivity.

Specifications are as follows:

Even though this device is extremely durable, we recommend that you purchase a padded sleeve or case for your child to carry the laptop in, in order to prevent unnecessary bumps and bruises. If you would like a full featured case, the Bump Armor CB Slim Hard Shell case w/ Shoulder Strap is a good one, with specifications as follows:

The Bump Armor CB Slim Hard Shell case features impact memory foam to protect your device from drops and bumps. In addition to retaining straps on each corner, an elastic strap secures your laptop just below the hinge. These straps work together to secure your laptop in a way that allows you to work without removing it from the bag. When it's time to call it quits, just close your laptop, zip the bag closed and go.

Price: $23 + tax

Another option is the Bump Armor RSP Sleeve Case, as follows:

In addition, many parents have requested a mouse to go with their laptops. While there are several wireless options available, we recommend a wired mouse so as to avoid interference with other students should they be brought to school. The District's partner offers special pricing on the Logitech B100 Wired Optical Mouse at $7.50. We have tested this mouse and found it to perform well with the laptops.
