SAMR Model

The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition Model offers a method of seeing how computer technology might impact teaching and learning. It also shows a progression that adopters of educational technology often follow as they progress through teaching and learning with technology.

SAMR model developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura http://www.hippasus.com

Substitution

In a substitution level, teachers or students are only using new technology tools to replace old ones, for instance, using Google Docs to replace writing on paper, the task ( writing) is the same but the tools are different.

Augmentation

Though this is a different level, we are still in the substitution mentality, but this time with added functionalities. Again using the example of Google Docs it not only provides services like auto saving, auto syncing, and auto sharing it also adds a real-time comment feature which teachers can use to collaborate with students during the writing process. Another feature of Google is the Classroom feature that allows teachers to set up a classroom and share assignments and create a digital learning environment that promotes technology use as a tool.

Modification

This is the level where technology is being used more effectively not to do the same task using different tools but to redesign new parts of the task and transform students learning. Again using Google, students can create a Google Lit Trip. Using Google maps they can map the journey of a character in literature or history. Some examples of Lit Trips for middle school can be found here. Starting a blog with the class or the using the comment feature in classroom will also add the authentic audience component for students which redefines the traditional classroom and gives them personal stake in the quality of work.

Redefinition

If you are to place this level in Blooms revised taxonomy pyramid, it would probably correspond to synthesis and evaluation as being the highest order thinking skills. Redefinition means that students use technology to create imperceptibly new tasks. Staying with our Google theme this level would have students using Google Hang Out's to collaborate with each other or students at a different school on a shared project. Creating a student Google site e-portfolio to showcase work and using a classroom site and blog to peer review other's work. At this level the physical classroom has also transformed. Students are no longer at individual desks but in groups working through out the classroom. Perhaps collaborating with students in another city, state or country. Here the technology is the door to endless possibilities.
