The Device

The devices that the District will uses are either the Acer TravelMate Spin B311 or Lenovo 300w. Designed with classroom environments in mind, both devices have touch screens and feature a ruggedized design with a rubber strip that frames the chassis and protects the device from unexpected bumps and drops. A solid 360 degree hinge can take on up to 25,000 swings, while the cover can withstand up to 132 lbs of pressure. The keyboard is spill-resistant with a water drainage design that protects against accidental spills. It doesn't need a fan, so it's whisper-quiet and runs cool. Both are slender, light, and deliver long battery life for portable computing with great productivity.

The Software

LVUSD is using free software to power all student devices. Free software enables us to offer students access to a diverse range of resources and tools on a reliable platform that teachers and students can count on. Students will use a custom version of Ubuntu Linux called "ubermix", which has been built specifically for use in an education environment. ubermix eliminates much of the complexity of typical proprietary operating systems, leaving an elegant, easy-to-use interface with reliable and secure underpinnings that are not prone to failure, malware, or general instability. All the tools you would expect are there, along with dozens more that you might not (click here to see a list of default applications). ubermix even includes a built-in "quick restore" feature that enables students to reset their systems in seconds, should something go awry, all without losing any of the files they may have been working on. In short, ubermix brings students an interface that does not impede the use of the system, empowering them through simplicity of design and freedom to explore without risk.
