Dance I includes the development of basic dance skills, kinesthetic sensitivity, and elements of space, time and energy. The course also incorporates beginning improvisational, choreographic, and performance techniques. Warm-up and exercise activities involve specific strands dealing with building strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Students who do not meet the standard for 5 of 6 areas may not exercise their option to invoke the two-year exemption. They must take physical education in grade 10 and in subsequent grades until they meet the standard for 5 of 6 areas.

Material in this course is a continuation of Dance I. In addition to advanced techniques, choreographic, and improvisational skills, this study of dance leads to performances including school assemblies, community events, and concert presentations. Also included are articulation of the historical and cultural roles of dance, aesthetic judgment, and critical thinking skills. Before and after-school rehearsals and performances are required. Students who do not meet the standard for 5 of 6 areas may not exercise their option to invoke the two-year exemption. They must take physical education in grade 10 and in subsequent grades until they meet the standard for 5 of 6 areas.

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn weight training and techniques used for obtaining optimal physical fitness, and mental and physical wellness throughout life. Students will benefit from comprehensive weight training, cardiorespiratory endurance, resistance training, agility training, flexibility, aerobic training, nutrition, mental health, disease awareness and overall lifelong wellness. Course includes both lecture and activity sessions. Students will be empowered to make wise choices, meet challenges, and develop positive behaviors and choices in fitness, nutrition, wellness and movement for life.

This course is open to all interested students who play a wind or percussion instrument. This class performs a wide variety of music for school events and wind ensemble concerts. The band participates at all home football games and select away games. The group also performs at one parade and one halftime show per year. In addition to a large selection of music, students will learn basic marching steps and routines.

The Physical Education program in the ninth grade will assist students in designing their own fitness programs. Students will gain an understanding of mechanical principles and the effects of exercise on the body. During each unit, students will develop interpersonal skills while engaged in some competitive activities. Activities may include: self-defense, aquatics, flag or touch football, circuit training, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, dancing, knowledge of CPR and health-related physical fitness tests. Warm-up and exercise activities involve specific strands dealing with strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. For high school youths the three overarching content standards are as follows: Standard 1) Students demonstrate knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2) Students achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and strategies. 3) Students demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity. Students who do not meet the standard for 5 of 6 areas may not exercise their option to invoke the two-year exemption. They must take physical education in grade 10 and in subsequent grades until they meet the standard for 5 of 6 areas.

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skill sets to achieve balance in all aspects of the health spectrum (social, mental/emotional, and physical). Students will be engaged in rigorous physical activity through performing safe and accessible yoga postures. Students will learn the proper structure, alignment, and actions for each posture. With the routine practice of these postures students will gain muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and coordination. Students will also learn and practice basic breathing and relaxation techniques. Students will learn how to appreciate and care for their bodies. They will learn modifications for injury management or illness. The content is designed to help students elevate their body awareness in order to maintain overall good health.
